In a move mirroring the ban on popular social media app TikTok, the government is preparing to impose restrictions on apps such as Bigo Live, Likee, Tinder, Snapchat, and Telegram. The decision, aimed at monitoring and regulating content, has been reported by BBC Nepali Service.
According to Information Technology expert Prakash Rayamajhi, who is part of a team formed by the Prime Minister’s office, these apps are being categorized as anti-social media. “We are studying both positive and negative impacts of these platforms on the technological aspect and in society,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive examination.
Prime Minister’s office, along with experts, has formed a task force to monitor these apps closely. The decision to immediately halt operations on TikTok was made during the October 27 cabinet meeting, citing negative effects on social harmony and the social environment.

The government’s decision faces opposition with 14 writ petitions currently under consideration in the Supreme Court. Bigo Live and Likee are apps from Singapore-based Bigo Technology, operated by Chinese companies, while Telegram is a Russian messaging app. Tinder and Snapchat, known for dating and messaging services, are products of American companies.
Initial studies from the Prime Minister’s office indicate that many of these apps are used for uploading sexually explicit content and for communication in Nepali society, causing negative impacts. The government is also closely monitoring games like PUBG and Free Fire.
The task force aims to provide a detailed report based on their study, recommending restrictions on these platforms. The ban on TikTok was enforced after similar concerns were raised regarding inappropriate content and its influence on Nepali citizens.
