AI Scams in Nepal: Deepfakes, Voice Cloning & Defences

The tools that make AI genuinely useful also make fraud dramatically easier. AI scams in Nepal now include convincing cloned voices, fabricated videos of public figures and automated conversations — and the defences are simpler than most people expect.

The scams currently circulating

1. Voice cloning — the family emergency call

How it works: a few seconds of someone’s voice, taken from a Facebook video or TikTok, is enough to clone it. You receive a call that sounds exactly like your son, daughter or brother, in distress, needing money urgently.

Why it works: the voice is genuinely convincing, and urgency prevents thinking.

The defence — this one is decisive: hang up and call the person back on their normal number. A cloned voice cannot answer their own phone. Establish this habit in your family today.

2. Deepfake video endorsements

How it works: fabricated videos showing well-known Nepali figures — businesspeople, journalists, celebrities — endorsing an investment scheme or trading platform.

Why it works: the person is recognisable, and the video looks real enough on a phone screen.

The defence: legitimate investment opportunities are never promoted through Facebook video ads with unrealistic returns. If a public figure appears to endorse an investment, check their official verified channels — the endorsement will not be there.

3. AI-generated fake shops and listings

How it works: AI-generated product photos, AI-written descriptions, and a Facebook page that looks established. Payment is taken; nothing arrives.

The defence: check page creation date and review history, insist on cash on delivery, and be suspicious of prices far below market — the same price sanity test that protects phone buyers.

4. Romance and friendship bots

How it works: AI-driven conversations build trust over weeks before an investment opportunity or emergency appears.

The defence: anyone who cannot video call is not who they claim. Anyone who introduces an investment opportunity is running a script.

5. Cloned business accounts

How it works: a business’s Facebook page is duplicated with AI-generated content, and customers are directed to pay a different account.

The defence — for business owners: monitor for clones of your page and warn customers. For buyers: verify payment details through a channel other than the one that sent them.

The universal defences

These work regardless of how the technology evolves:

  1. Call back on a known number. Defeats every voice-cloning scam. This single habit is the most valuable thing in this article.
  2. Agree a family code word — a word only your family knows, asked when money is discussed by phone. Simple, free, effective.
  3. Never share OTPs. No bank, wallet, police officer or company representative will ever ask. Ever.
  4. Never install screen-sharing apps at a caller’s request — AnyDesk, TeamViewer and similar. This remains the single most common account-emptying method in Nepal.
  5. Slow down. Urgency is the shared ingredient in every scam. Legitimate matters survive a ten-minute delay; scams do not.
  6. Verify through a second channel. If a message asks for money, confirm through a different medium entirely.

Why AI made this worse

Previously, scams required effort — writing convincing text, forging documents, sounding right on a call. AI removed those barriers. What has not changed:

  • Scammers still need you to act quickly
  • They still need you to bypass verification
  • They still need payment through irreversible channels

Break any one of those three and the scam fails, regardless of how sophisticated the technology behind it is.

If it has already happened

  1. Contact your bank or wallet immediately — speed matters enormously for recovery
  2. Report to Nepal Police Cyber Bureau
  3. Preserve everything — screenshots, numbers, transaction IDs
  4. Tell people. Shame keeps victims silent, and silence protects scammers. Sharing what happened protects your community.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI really clone a Nepali voice? Yes. Voice cloning works across languages, and a few seconds of public audio is enough. The call-back defence works regardless.

How do I spot a deepfake video? Detection gets harder each year, so do not rely on spotting artefacts. Rely instead on the rule: verify through official channels, and treat any investment promoted by video ad as fraudulent.

Are AI scams reported often in Nepal? Cyber-fraud complaints have grown substantially, and AI-assisted methods are part of that. Many cases go unreported due to embarrassment.

What is the single best protection? Calling back on a known number. It defeats voice cloning, which is currently the most convincing attack.

Can these scams be traced? Sometimes, especially when reported quickly. Report immediately — delay reduces the chance substantially.

The bottom line

AI scams in Nepal work by removing your time to think. The defences are unglamorous and effective: call back on a known number, agree a family code word, never share OTPs, never install screen-sharing apps, and slow down. Teach these to the people in your family least likely to be reading this — they are the ones being called.
