Nepal’s power supply has improved substantially, but interruptions still happen — and for anyone working from home or running a business, backup power is infrastructure rather than luxury. Here is how to choose the best inverter in Nepal for what you actually need to run.

Sizing an inverter system correctly

This is where most Nepali installations go wrong — undersized, or sized by guesswork.

Two separate numbers:

1. Inverter capacity (VA or watts) — determines what you can run simultaneously.

List every device you want on backup and add up their wattage. Lights, fans, router, television, laptop chargers. Add headroom — running an inverter at its limit shortens its life.

2. Battery capacity (Ah) — determines how long you can run it.

A larger battery runs the same load for longer. Sizing this requires knowing both your total load and how long a typical outage lasts where you live.

Ask the supplier to show the calculation, not just quote a package. A supplier who cannot explain the sizing is selling a box, not a solution.

What not to connect

Do not put heavy inductive loads on a domestic inverter:

  • Refrigerators and freezers (large startup surge)
  • Air conditioners
  • Water pumps and motors
  • Electric heaters and geysers
  • Induction cooktops

Lithium costs substantially more up front and offers longer life, lighter weight and more usable capacity. Increasingly worth considering for systems you will keep many years.

Safety — non-negotiable

  1. Batteries must be ventilated. Lead-acid batteries release hydrogen gas while charging. Never install them in a sealed cupboard.
  2. Correct wiring gauge. Inverter systems carry high DC current; undersized cable is a fire hazard.
  3. Proper earthing — have it tested, not assumed.
  4. Appropriate fusing and protection on both DC and AC sides.
  5. Professional installation. This is not a DIY job.
  6. Keep batteries away from living and sleeping areas.
  7. Never use unsealed batteries indoors without ventilation.

Solar

Adding solar makes sense if:

  • You have suitable roof space and orientation
  • Outages are frequent or long where you live
  • You plan to stay in the property for years
