Nepali summers, particularly in the Terai, are genuinely hard on phones. Here is what causes phone overheating, what is normal, what is not, and the fixes that actually work.
What is normal and what is not

Warm is normal. Hot is a signal.
The main causes
1. Direct sunlight — the biggest cause in Nepal.
A phone on a dashboard, a table by a window, or held in direct sun heats far faster than any internal process can cause. This is also the single worst thing for long-term battery health.
2. Charging while gaming. As our fast charging explainer covers, this is the worst combination — two heat sources at once. Use bypass charging if your phone supports it, or simply do not.
3. Sustained heavy load. Gaming, video recording, navigation with the screen on. Our gaming guide covers thermal management for extended sessions.
4. A thick case. It traps heat. Remove it during long gaming sessions or while fast charging.
5. Poor signal. A phone struggling to hold a connection increases transmit power, which generates heat. Common in areas with weak coverage.
6. A background app misbehaving. Something stuck in a loop, consuming the processor continuously.
7. A failing battery. An old, degraded battery generates more heat.
The fixes that work
Immediately:
- Move it out of the sun. The most effective single action.
- Remove the case
- Stop charging if it is charging
- Close everything, and consider restarting the phone
- Turn on aeroplane mode briefly if signal-related — it stops the radio working hard
- Do not put it in the fridge. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the phone, which is worse than the heat.
Longer term:
- Check which app is responsible — Settings → Battery usage shows what has been consuming power

Why it matters beyond comfort

When to see the dealer
Stop using the phone and get it checked if:
- The battery is visibly swollen — the back panel lifting, or the phone rocking on a flat surface. Do not press or puncture it.
- It gets hot while idle, with nothing running
- It shuts down from heat repeatedly
- There is any smell of burning or chemicals
- It gets hot while charging with the manufacturer’s own charger and nothing running
