What to verify before buying
Do not accept “we have a national network” as an answer.
Ask:
- What is the address of the nearest authorised service centre to me? An actual address.
- Are screens and batteries for this model stocked, or ordered?
- What is the typical turnaround for a screen replacement?
- What does a screen replacement cost for this model?
- Is the warranty honoured at that location?
Question 4 is worth asking even on a new phone, because it tells you what you are exposed to — and whether a protection plan is worth buying.
The grey-market problem
A phone bought through import channels may not be serviceable under warranty at all, regardless of how good the brand’s network is.
This is the core issue with Pixel and much iPhone supply in Nepal, and it applies to any grey-market unit.
Always:
- Dial \*#06# and verify the IMEI against the MDMS registry
- Get the warranty in writing on the bill, with the seller’s stamp — who honours it, for how long, and where
A brand with an excellent network does not help you if your specific unit is outside it.
If you live outside Kathmandu
This narrows the sensible list considerably, and it should.
Ask specifically:
- Is there a service point in your district or province?
- If not, what is the nearest, and what is the process?
- Does the brand offer a pickup or courier service?
For a phone that is your primary means of communication and payment, a week without it is a serious problem. Choose accordingly — a slightly weaker specification from a brand you can get repaired locally is the better purchase.
Before you hand over your phone

- Photograph the phone’s condition before handing it over
- Get a receipt including the serial number and the reported fault
- Get a written estimate before authorising work
- Ask whether the diagnostic fee applies if you decline the repair
- Ask for the old parts back when components are replaced
Independent repair shops
Only after warranty expires — independent repair voids it, with no way back.
After warranty, a reputable independent shop is often cheaper and faster, particularly for screen and battery replacement. Quality varies enormously, so choose on reputation.
Ask what parts they use. A cheap third-party screen may have worse colour, brightness or touch response than the original.
