Kathmandu Valley has more EV charging capability than most Nepali drivers realise, and less than the anxious assume. Here is how EV charging in Kathmandu actually works, and how to plan around it.

Planning around public charging
Before relying on any public charger:
- Confirm the connector type matches your vehicle. Standards differ, and arriving at a charger you cannot physically use is the most common EV frustration.
- Check the charger is operational — use the network’s app where one exists, or call ahead. A single out-of-service unit changes your plan.
- Understand the payment method — app, card, or account
- Have a backup location identified
- Do not arrive at 5%. Plan to reach a charger with meaningful reserve.
The rule: never make a journey that depends on one specific charger working.
Charging speed realities
DC fast charging slows substantially above 80%. This is by design, to protect the battery.
The practical implication: on a journey, charging from 20% to 80% is efficient. Charging from 80% to 100% takes disproportionately long. Stop at 80% and continue unless you genuinely need the full range.
Speed also depends on:
- Your vehicle’s maximum accepted charging rate — a fast charger cannot exceed what your car will take
- Battery temperature — a cold or very hot pack charges more slowly
- How full the battery already is
- Whether other vehicles are sharing the station’s capacity
Charging etiquette
Nepal’s charging network is small enough that behaviour matters:
- Move your vehicle when charging completes. A finished car occupying a charger blocks everyone.
- Do not unplug someone else’s vehicle
- Do not use a charging bay for ordinary parking
- Report faulty units to the network so they get fixed
Apartment and shared parking
The most common practical obstacle for Kathmandu EV owners.
Options:
- Building permission for a dedicated point, with a metering arrangement so your consumption is billed to you. Start this conversation early — it takes time.

- Workplace charging, if your employer offers it
- Public charging as primary — workable but inconvenient as a long-term plan

Beyond the Valley
Charging along the main highway corridors has improved substantially. Outside those corridors it remains thin.
