Phone Insurance and Screen Protection Plans in Nepal

Updated August 2026. Terms vary by provider — always read the specific plan document.

Buy a phone in Nepal and you will likely be offered a protection plan at the counter. Whether phone insurance in Nepal is worth the money depends almost entirely on what your phone cost — and on reading terms most buyers never look at.

What these plans typically cover

Manufacturer warranty Screen protection plan Comprehensive plan
Manufacturing defects Yes — Usually
Accidental screen damage No Yes Yes
Other physical damage No No Usually
Liquid damage No Rarely Sometimes
Theft No No Sometimes
Cost Included Low Higher

The critical gap the manufacturer warranty leaves: accidental damage and liquid damage are excluded, at every price and every IP rating. That is precisely what protection plans sell against.

The terms that decide value

Read these before buying any plan:

  1. The excess or deductible. What do you pay per claim? A plan with a high excess on a mid-range phone may cover very little of the actual repair.
  2. Number of claims allowed. Most plans permit one claim, sometimes two, over the term. A second cracked screen is your own problem.
  3. Repair or replace, and with what? Original parts, or third-party? On a flagship, this materially affects the outcome.
  4. Where the repair happens — is there an authorised centre you can reach?
  5. The claim process and turnaround. How long will you be without the phone?
  6. Exclusions. Liquid damage is frequently excluded from screen plans specifically.
  7. The term — usually one year, occasionally two.

Calculate the plan cost plus the excess against the actual out-of-pocket screen repair price for your model. If the difference is small, the plan is not worth it.

When a plan makes sense

1. Flagship and upper-mid phones. A screen repair on an expensive phone can cost a substantial fraction of the phone’s value. This is where protection genuinely pays.

2. Foldables. The inner display is the most expensive component in consumer phones, and the most vulnerable. If you buy a foldable, protection is close to essential.

3. High-risk use. Daily riding, outdoor work, construction sites, or simply a history of dropping phones.

4. When replacing the phone would be a financial problem. That is the real test for any insurance.

When it does not

1. Budget and lower mid-range phones. If the plan plus excess approaches the cost of the repair — or a meaningful fraction of a replacement phone — it is poor value.

2. If you use a good case and a tempered glass screen protector. Which brings us to the point most counter staff will not make.

The cheaper alternative most people should take

A quality case and a tempered glass screen protector cost a small fraction of a protection plan and prevent most of the damage those plans pay for.

  • A tempered glass protector absorbs the impact and cracks instead of your screen. Replacing it costs very little.
  • A case with raised edges around the screen and camera prevents the most common drop damage
  • Both together dramatically reduce your realistic claim probability

Our cases and screen protectors guide covers what to buy. For most Nepali buyers with a mid-range phone, this is the correct answer and the protection plan is not.

What no plan covers

Water damage is excluded from most phone protection, and from every manufacturer warranty, regardless of the IP rating on the box. Our IP rating explainer covers why an IP68 phone can still be refused a water-damage claim.

The practical protection is behavioural: dry the charging port before plugging in, do not charge a damp phone, and use a waterproof pouch when riding in monsoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is phone insurance worth it in Nepal? On flagships and foldables, generally yes. On budget and lower mid-range phones, usually not — a case and screen protector cost far less and prevent most damage.

Does the manufacturer warranty cover a cracked screen? No. Accidental damage is excluded from every manufacturer warranty.

What should I check before buying a plan? The excess, the number of claims allowed, whether original parts are used, and whether liquid damage is excluded.

Does phone insurance cover water damage? Often not — it is excluded from most screen plans and from all manufacturer warranties. Check the specific document.

What is the cheapest effective protection? A tempered glass screen protector and a case with raised edges. Together they prevent most of what protection plans pay out for.

The bottom line

Phone insurance in Nepal earns its money on flagships and foldables, where a screen repair is a serious expense. Below that, a tempered glass protector and a decent case do most of the same job for a fraction of the cost. Read the excess and the claim limit before signing anything at the counter — those two numbers decide whether the plan is worth buying at all.
